SAMO GIRLS SOCCER USES SOLID TEAMWORK TO STAY STRONG

by Michael Bromberg from The Samohi  (12/21/2006)

It must be said: The Lady Shebas are really, really good.  Like, so good it hurts.  So good in fact, head coach Serafin Rodiguez states that "This is the best team I've ever coached here at Samo.  This is definitely one of the best teams Samo soccer has ever had.  We fully expect to make a far run in CIF."  You might say prove it.  So here are some facts.

They defeated perennial powerhouse Palos Verdes 3-1 December 13, in a rather easy game, with two goals from senior Samantha Greene and a sealing goal from senior Daniela Dacosta.  As well, they are the first girls Samo soccer team to ever make it to the South Torrance Holiday Tournament championship.

So you might ask, what makes them so good?   Well, they don't just have one weapon.  They are completely balanced with talent in every spot.  Leading the offence are Dacosta, a constant goal scorer, and senior Michela Fitten, a ferocious, spirited, feisty, and experienced player.  Greene, a star already recruited to play soccer at Northwestern, leads the midfield.  And last, but not least, co-captain Danielle Duarte leads the rock-hard defense.

But Danielle is not the only Duarte on the team.  The left side, or, as some call it, the "D-side", consists of junior Jenny Duarte at left forward, junior Michelle Duarte at left mid, and Danielle at left defense.  Says Jenny Duarte, "In the past years, there has always been bickering.  But this year, we have such good chemistry, nothing should be able to stop us. We are the true sorority of Samo".  She adds, "We practice incredibly hard, and our physical shape definitely helps us in the games".

But the Lady Shebas are not completely infallible.  While they were able to beat West Torrance 1-0 on December 18, earlier that week, they lost the South Bay tournament championship game to Chadwick 0-2, a team they beat earlier in the month.  Says senior Bianca Greene, "We just didn't bring it".

But in general, Coach Rodriguez states with a smile, "We are finding ways to beat a lot of really good teams.  As long as we stay motivated, this team will be one to beat".
